Postal History
Introduction
A postage stamp began as a piece of paper which prepaid postal service equivalent to its face value.Over time, this simple function got diversified while it remained a form of contract between the customer and the post office.It also has other functions which have been increasingly realized by postal administrations.
The Origin and Growth of Philately�
Stamp collecting was triggered by the first issue of postage stamps in 1840.�On the 6th May, the issue of the Penny Black marked the moment when stamp collecting was first possible.�

While it was probably not�until�the 1860’s that collecting became serious,�there�is no doubt that�people�began to put�aside�the gummed�pieces�of�paper�that�eventually bore the name “postage stamps”,�from the first days of their issue.�Some collecting did already exist prior to 1840 with the collection of autographs (signatures) on old �letters and of revenue�stamps.�The collection of autographs on old letters eventually led to the collecting of postal markings and the discipline of Postal History.
A combination of beauty of Penny Black and a habit of collecting meant that stamp collecting was born from the very first postage stamp issue.However, it was still some time before the other major elements began to emerge of what is now a philately industry.

The Classes of Philately
One of the interesting facets of philately is that it is a competitive hobby.Competitive exhibitions are held in most of the countries.However, it should be noted that although the numbers of competitors are relatively large, they represent only a small percentage of collectors overall.
What competitive philately does is set standards and bench marks which can be used by all collectors in their particular stamp collecting interest.Nevertheless, philately remains a hobby with complete freedom for the individual collector to act independently.
Because of the competitive aspect of philately, various areas of collecting interest have been designated as classes. They can be regarded as the major segments of the hobby. Most have arisen from the types of products produced by postal administrations to satisfy a postal (or related) requirement.

1.Traditional Philately

The Traditional Philately comprise exhibits which examine the stamp issues from a particular country or group of countries.
This is the mother of all philately. It is concerned with the nature,production, classification and usage of postage stamps.It basically covers what many people think of as the hobby of stamp collecting.
The postage stamps, miniature sheets, and first day covers produced by postal administration are the basic components of this class.Also collected in this class are materials not commonly available from postal administration such as archival material related to the production of postage stamps including artists’ drawings, essays, proofs and printers’ specimens.
2.Postal History

This class is for exhibits which trace the development of the postal system, with particular attention to the routes and postal rates.
Postal History is a relatively new class of philately with collectors commencing this aspect of the hobby in the 1930’s. It has been a major growth area in the last two decades and has stimulated the commercials sector of the industry.
While it comprises, in the main, covers (including used postcards and parcelwrappers ),itis basically the study of postal rates, postal markingsand mail routes. Thus, first day covers are commonly not collected in this class unless they bear the correct postal rate and have been carried in the mail.
This class is of some interest to postal administration as it concerns the collection and study of postmarks (Marcophily).
3.Thematic Philately

The main emphasis of Thematic Philately is story telling by the use of a wide variety of philatelic materials issued by different postal administrations.
Thematic Philately is a totally different style of collecting. The underlying interest is in the postage stamp design and thus, it differs from collecting the postage stamps of one country, or a general collection of the postage stamps of a region or the world.
In this class, the collector seeks to gather stamps related to a theme(or topic or subject), for example Birds, Horses, Chess, Transportation & Architectural the number of subject is endless and only limited by the collector’s image.
Thematic philately has progressed so that all philatelic material which is concerned with the subject matter is collectable.This includes the postage stamps (of course), booklets, postmarks, postal stationery, meter marks, aerophilatelic cachets and maximum cards.
Modern printing methods and the change in issuing policies by postal administrations over the years to include pictorial postage stamps, have led to an even greater emphasis on this class.It is now the common collecting style of new entrants to the hobby, particularly youth.
For postal administrations, such collectors are occasional collectors because they do not collect every issue. For philately, these collectors are dedicated because collecting postage stamps is their major hobby.The major interest in this type of collector for the postal administration is the style and method of collecting.Such collectors prefer an uncluttered style of design and are least attracted to the mixing of unrelated themes on one postage stamp or on a commemorative set of stamps.
4.Youth Philately

This class is for exhibitors at or below the age of 21.Youth Philately is a critical part of the hobby.Youth (up to 21 year of age) are encouraged to develop their collecting skills by entering competition in one of four different age groups, each of which has distinct rules of competition.They can enter exhibits based on any of the recognized classes of philately.
5.One Frame Exhibit

This is the latest class in International philately still in its experimental rounds. Exhibits in this Class should not simply have One Frame extracted from a multiple frame exhibit but should be based on a subject that is best treated as One Frame.Exhibits are also welcome from novice exhibitors who are developing a subject which is capable of expanding to more than One Frame in the near future.
